At Canada Blooms, the Ontario Regional Common Ground Alliance garden by Fern Ridge Eco Landscaping contains many Hart’s Tongue Ferns, which are rare wild plants living on parts of the Niagara Escarpment. They are assessed as a species of special concern as they may become endangered. They can’t easily be transplanted but fortunately, can be bought at some nurseries. They thrive on rocks in deep shade under deciduous trees, especially maple and beech but seem to need moist, mossy areas to survive.
One nursery that stocks them is Vineland Nurseries, which says “We can get Hart’s Tongue Fern (Asplenium scolopendrium). They are presently available in a 9cm pot @$8.00 each. Our supplier listed only 32 available. They may be also available later on in the season in a 1gal pot for $13.00.”
Canada Blooms opens today, March 10 and runs to March 19 in Enercare Centre, Exhibition Place, Toronto. Niagara Escarpment Views is a proud media sponsor.
